Celebrating a 50-year career – Azores International Festival
Music has always been part of Herman’s life. From his early days at the German School in Lisbon, where he took cello lessons with the legendary “Frau Verner”, through his time in jazz as a bass guitarist in conductor Pedro Osório’s band, to a comedy career punctuated by hugely successful popular songs, sounds and tones have always been catalysts for his art.
Accompanied on piano by his (faithful) musical director Pedro Duarte, Herman offers a juicy journey through many styles and examples of how music and humour share the same DNA.
From Alberto Janes’s compositions for Amália Rodrigues, through the works of César de Oliveira, Ary dos Santos and Carlos Paião, and recalling some of his own creations, it is fascinating to see how musical art seasons the noblest of our senses: the sense of humour.
The title of the show could not be more fitting, topical and explicit: “Da clave de sol, à clave de lol” (From the treble clef to the LOL clef). A fine excuse to celebrate his fifty-year career, in very good company.
